As a relief teacher, I meticulously assisted the form teachers with their lessons and daily routines, consisting of children’s arrival and departure, shower and meal time. Additionally, during the festive season, Christmas and Hari Raya respectively, I helped to design, create and put up festive decorations around the classrooms. I also facilitated and assisted the teachers during the popcorn and cookie making, as well as costume fitting for the children.
Besides my involvement in the school’s celebration, I also effectively communicate with family members of different ethnicities on a daily basis by sharing with them their child’s day in school whenever they ask.
From this experience, it broadened my perspective as an early educator through exposure to a different environment and teaching philosophy. Furthermore, it improved my language skill as communicating with families of different ethnicities required me to be bilingual (English and Chinese).
I facilitated the costume changing during the Hari Raya celebration and was responsible for educating the children on the accurate way to wear the costume. I also offered assistance when they were facing difficulties putting on the costume. In addition, I effectively managed the children by instructing them to line up and be patient.
The costume changing was carried out successfully without any hiccups as i was well equipped with the teaching techniques required by preschoolers and the relevant knowledge regarding ethnic costumes.
As a relief teacher, I meticulously assisted the form teachers with their lessons and daily routines, consisting of children’s arrival and departure, shower and meal time. Additionally, I swiftly attended to the children’s needs and requests.
My key takeaway during my short stint in the centre was the planning of field-trips and events that I proactively volunteered to be part of. I confidently assisted the teacher with the planning and organizing of field trips to the Singapore Zoo and S.E.A Aquarium as well as events such as the Pajama Party.
This experience further enhanced my creative planning and organizational skills as I had to propose an interesting yet age appropriate idea for field trips and events catered to the children. In addition, it enhanced my communication skills as I had to liaise with the teachers of different levels in the centre about the respective plans.
I assisted with the planning and executing of the pajama party for the nursery class. I was tasked to plan the schedule and come up with activities for the party. This required me to be equipped with event planning and organising skills as well as understand the children's behavior to effectively come up with activities which were catered to them.
The event went well as the children were observed to be enjoying the various activities (movie time, ice cream party, etc) planned out for them.
I was allocated to My First Skool @ Waterway Point for my second practicum. During my stint in the centre, I independently designed and implemented integrated lessons (e.g Motor Skills and Numeracy) for a Playgroup class (3 Year Old). During which, I meticulously created lesson materials and visual aids to deepen the children’s understanding of the lesson concepts.
Additionally, I was given the opportunity to utilise what I learned from my coursework by thoroughly assessing and creating a child’s portfolio based on my selected child's learning abilities and behavior.
From this experience, I learned how to apply appropriate teaching methods to best cater to the various learning abilities of each student. This equipped me, as an early educator, with the flexibility to design innovative lessons with the resources available.
I was allocated to My First Skool @ Compassvale 4 for my first practicum. During my stint in the centre, I diligently observed and carefully assessed the different learning corners in the classroom, such as the Language and Literacy corner. Thus, I created comprehensive checklists to aid with the assessment.
Besides observing learning corners, I was also given the opportunity to observe the children. However, as a new student teacher with no prior experience in child observation, I was initially unfamiliar with the process of observing and assessing a child accurately and effectively. I overcame this difficulty with the guidance of my mentor who recommended the use of anecdotal records to aid my observation and assessment
This experience made me realise that a safe and comfortable environment is paramount for children to learn and grow holistically. Additionally, I realised that we as educators play a significant role in impacting the children’s life, as we are directly in contact with them. This gives us the opportunity to teach, inspire and bring out the best in the children.
Creative Arts: Ziploc Bag Finger Painting
I had to conduct an Aesthetics and Creative Expression lesson on colors and decided that finger painting was the optimal approach as it is a fun sensory activity that effectively engages youger children.
In this picture, I was explaining and demonstrating the steps of the activity, whereby the children will place some color paints into the Ziploc bag and mix it with their fingers. This action will then create a blend of coloring.
At the end of the lesson, the children were able to create beautiful artworks by exploring and mixing different colored paints in their Ziploc bags. Additionally, they were able to recognise and understand that by mixing two colors, it will form a secondary color.
I was allocated to My First Skool @ Blk 119 Edgefield Plains for my 6-month internship. Through this internship experience, I gained valuable insights about my role as an early educator. For instance, planning of Field-trips, school events and celebrations (Racial Harmony Day, National Day). Additionally, I was given the opportunity to spearhead the National Day celebration where I prepared and ensured that the technical equipment were at their optimal functionality. Furthermore, I meticulously designed interactive teaching and learning materials to allow children to gain knowledge independently.
Moreover, I was able to improve my teaching and classroom management skills with the numerous teaching opportunities provided.
My key takeaways were being more confident in teaching and facilitating children of all ages, as well as the close bonds forged between the children, teachers and myself.
Pre-Field Trip activity
I designed this activity that focuses on the topic 'Eye', in relation to the class upcoming field trip to the Optometry. In this activity, children are invited to design their spectacle template with the coloring materials provided.
Other than sharing information of the Eye Anatomy and its functions, I facilitated the children in pasting the chopstick onto the template to allow easier holding of the template. This experience further enhanced my creative planning as I had to propose an interesting yet age appropriate lesson ideas catered to the children.
